No, you didn't just wake up and it's the day after Christmas. Boxing
Day, June 1, has a different meaning today. Our bikes are at the shop
being packaged for the trip to Vancouver tomorrow........Sid's at
Kamikaze, and mine receiving a last minute tune before Ben at Squire
Johns boxes up the R3. Both shops have been incredibly helpful and
generous during our preparations for the trip, topped off by the last
minute arrival of our new Garmin Edge 1000 computers at Squires. These
are the latest and greatest from Garmin, and I encourage you to check
them out. My previous post is from a little test ride around the block,
and an example of the data we will be able to upload daily from the
1000's. I'm not sure if I really want everyone to see my performance,
or lack of it, but what the hell, we're all in this together.
Jutta
and I spent yesterday at the cottage, finalizing a few honey do's, and
enjoying our last day on the beach together for a couple of months. I
also tested a few recipes from a great book called The Feed Zone,
written by Dr. Allen Lim and celebrated chef Biju Thomas, that provides
excellent meal planning and recipes for athletes, in particular,
cyclists. My rice cakes are wonderful, promising to be a tasty
consistent energy source while riding, and an alternative to the
pre-packaged sweet bars, etc., that we have all used, while my sweet
potato burritos were not as high on the taste scale (need more spices
and extras), but are still great bike food and easy to carry in your
jersey pocket. A second book called The Feed Zone - Portables, is also
available, and expands the menu with easy to carry lunches, and many
more recipes for all times of day.
Sid and I will spend Tuesday
ensuring we are all packed up and ready to go........will likely ride to
the shore and back for our ceremonial wheel dipping.......have our last
farewell dinner (8 at last count).........down a six pack or two, and
hit the sack.
Pictures to follow......film at 11.
Cheers.......Hugh
