July 25 - Day 51 - Quebec here we come

For some reason I was up at 5:30 this morning, but made good use of my time finishing off yesterday's blog, and giving the bike a clean and lube to get ready for todays ride.  Our plan was to leave Manotick Station, and get into Quebec, camping at Trans-Canadien Campground in Rigaud, without using any primary highways.  After clearing the Ottawa area, we were clearly in the country, enjoying some smooth quiet secondary roads, and with a helping wind, we were making great time.

The one thing that differs about this eastern swing is the number of small communities we pass through, and obviously the density of the population.  Plenty of places to stop for water and fuel, so not as much pressure on Tony to service us on the road.  Timmy's was our first stop after riding 50km during the morning 2 hour spin class.  I laid off the doughnuts this morning, but did pile into a breakfast sandwich like there was no tomorrow.

The churches are beautiful, and the centrepiece of the communities

By the time we were approaching the 100km mark, I was starting to run out of gas, and needed a pit stop bad.  We passed a sign for the next town, Vankleek Hill 6 km ahead, so I pushed on knowing a stop was coming soon. Vankleek Hill is well named, because it sits on top of a hill!  Riding through town I asked someone where I could grab a coffee, but then spotted a tea room just down the street.  Ahhhhh, a cup of tea.......that's the ticket.  We were greeted by Sandra, the proprietor, and quickly met her parents Ruth and Ken.  All were very welcoming to these two six foot+ guys in banana suits and helmets, and it wasn't long before we were sipping tea, mine hot, Sid's iced, and having a bite to eat.

Ruth mentioned that Sandra had called the local newspaper to let them know there were a couple of cross country cyclists in town, and when she was unable to reach anyone, Ruth said she would run down the street and let them know in person.  Shortly thereafter, the stunning Felicia Latour from The Review walked in, introduced herself, and the interview began.  Sid and I told her everything we could without giving away any trade secrets or incriminating ourselves.......whew that was close.  Sandra wouldn't let us buy lunch......a very generous gesture on her part that was unexpected, but as I have said before, the people all across this country are just the best, and not because they buy us lunch, it's because they are truly great people.  Sandra said she wanted to do something nice for us, and she sure did.  My scones, fresh cream, and homemade jam was amazing and really hit the spot.

Ken and Ruth......Sandra too shy

As I mentioned, we were Quebec bound today, and even though the sign was not as great as it might have been if we were on a major roadway, we still stopped for the picture.

This campground has 540 sites, all with at least two people, and many with four or five.  It is a good sized town all on its own.  Looking forward to our trip around Montreal tomorrow......so goodnight all.......hope I can send this because the wifi is crap here.  All the best.
