July 4 - Day 30 - Home of the Man Eating Wolf Mosquitos

I’m not sure why, but today was a slower start than usual for us.  No reason really, we just took longer to do everything we normally do prior to riding, but either way we pulled out of Happy Land R.V. Park in Kakabeka Falls, feeling happy and ready to ride.  My R3 had just been tuned at Petrie’s in Thunder Bay and was running clean and smooth.  I can’t thank those guys enough for taking such good care of us, so if you are ever riding through this part of the country, remember they are the last bicycle shop with a mechanic until you reach Sault Ste. Marie over 600 km east of here.  Not sure if I have his name 100% but Farzam was a treat and really knows his stuff.

We burned through the first hour and a half, and found ourselves at the entrance to the Terry Fox memorial site.  What a wonderful tribute to this young man who raised the consciousness of a nation with his courage and determination.  It was an inspiring visit, and I found myself not wanting to leave right away, so I took many pictures and enjoyed the sweeping views from this vantage point high above Thunder Bay.

Lakeshore Road was a perfect route out of Thunder Bay, winding along the shore north of the city with great views of the lake, and it re-connected with the highway further out of town, providing a nice break from the trucks and speeding traffic for a while.  It wasn’t long before we passed Loon Lake Road where we would be returning for dinner at Tuckwell’s, and an hour or so later when we reached Wolf River Campground, our home for the evening.  We have renamed the campgound Mosquito Hollow for obvious reasons……the worst we have seen yet.

Sleeping Giant

Many thanks to our dinner hosts this evening......Cathy, thanks for putting it all together, and Linda and Paul, such a pleasure to meet you, and a real treat for us to get out of the camper for a night.  Really enjoyed your company, and hopefully we will have a chance to reciprocate at the beach sometime soon.

Outside the International Hostel in Thunder Bay......distance signs to everywhere, but couldn't find one to Collingwood or St.Johns

I am looking forward to the next few days of riding, as we will be back into some serious hills for the first time since BC.  We will make a right hand turn in Nipigon, and basically follow the north shore of Superior all the way to Sault Set. Marie.  Getting closer baby.
